The Winter Tradition
So, The Winter Tradition played at Madhatters in Inverness on the 9th February as part of the tour which is taking place for the release of their new single 'Departures'. The band are also toured in other venues around Scotland and England. I've already listened to 'Departures' and it is amazing so make sure you listen to it (linked under the interview) and make sure you get along to one of their gigs on the tour too! The video for the new single will be released later this month so make sure to look out for it!
- For anyone who hasn’t heard the band before, what type of music would you say you play?
I guess we categorise us under the 'alternative rock' belt. We like to keep things interesting and are always experimenting with different instruments and sounds. At times, we are a straight up guitar rock band but we are definitely not scared to step out of those lines - So, you will be releasing your new single ‘Departures’ in February. Have you got plans to release new music after?
'Departures' is the first song to be released after our debut album 'Gradients' was released. We are currently working on a whole bunch of new songs. 'Departures' is the first to be heard from these. - You’re tour will be going on in lots of different venues in cities around Scotland and England. If you could play in any venue that you’ve not played in where would it be?
Good question! Obviously we would love to be playing (and selling out!) the biggest and best venues throughout the UK! Realistically, I would love to be some of the venues down in Brighton. I've never been before and we've never managed to get down there on a tour yet - maybe next time!
- What are the plans for the band after the tour is finished?
We're going to be writing and recording lots more and prepare for our biggest year yet! We have lots and lots of exciting and big plans that we can't wait to share with everyone.
- What were the bands highlights of 2013?
2013 was a great year for the band! The highlight would have to be when we headlined a hometown show at The Liquid Room as part of the Edinburgh Fringe. It was our biggest show to date and we put on our biggest production yet. It was great fun and the response and turn out was insane!
- What music do you all like listening to?
We all listen to a variety of different bands and genres of music. We're constantly on the look out for new bands and new types of sounds to get inspiration from. Sounds fascinate me. I love trying to create different atmospheres and feelings with different sounds. Bands we are currently listening to: Death Cab for Cutie, Jimmy Eat World, Sigur Ros, Freelance Whales to name but a few!
- You released your debut album ‘Gradients’ in 2012, did you have any musical influences when writing the album?
'Gradients' was our first full length release which took us the best part of a year to write and record. Our musical influences swapped and changed frequently throughout the writing and recording process but we always had a focus of how we would like it to sound and come across at the end.
- Where can people listen or buy ‘Gradients’ from?
You can listen and buy 'Gradients' on Spotify, iTunes, SoundCloud, our website (www.thewintertradition.com) and at our shows!
- And finally, do you have any advice to people who are interested in working in the music industry?
It's hard work and sometimes not nice, but nothing can beat playing your own songs infront of an audience in a nice venue!
