With such a good line-up, it was obvious that this was going to be a really good gig and it definitely was! The gig was held as a fundraiser for Nairn Football team. There’s never normally anything like this in Nairn so I’ve just gotten used to the idea of having to go through to Inverness all the time, so when I heard about this gig I knew I was definitely going! There were five local musicians playing at the gig, who are all definitely worth going to see.
Starting off the night was Hollie Atkinson who is a young singer-songwriter from Nairn. She played a mixture of her own songs and well known covers which everyone seemed to really like.
Next on was Josephine Sillars who is also a young singer-songwriter from Dingwall. She played a mixture of her own songs and also an Amanda Palmer cover which sounded really good. Josephine’s songs sound really quirky and it becomes clear from the moment she starts singing that she has a really powerful voice.
After was Emma Mitchell who was also joined by Matt Sillars, Barrie Maclennan and Dave Bell to form the ‘Blues Experience’. The band’s music is very up-beat and got people in the crowd dancing! Emma is an amazing singer and their songs sounded so good! The band have not been together for long at all but you wouldn’t have known.
There was then a quick break and the raffle and auction were held which were also going toward funds for the Nairn football team. They raised so much money, including over £4000 auctioning off a years worth of chippy’s!
Hollie came back on for 10 minutes after the raffle and auction. She played a few more well-known covers including Stay-Out by Nina Nesbitt (love that song!)
Jemma Tweedie was on next who’s from Nairn. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen Jemma play now but her music is amazing and really catchy. She played a few of her own songs including ‘Drunken Coastal Town’ which is written about Nairn and seemed quite appropriate for some of the people who were at the gig! She sounded really good and the crowd all seemed to love her music.
Finishing off the night was Furry Vengeance who are a pop band from Inverness. They were definitely the best way to end the night and had everyone up dancing. Their music is really good and so catchy as well. They finished the set with a little medley of songs, which, if you’ve seen the band before is the best medley of songs ever! They then did an encore playing ‘Little Ray of Sunshine’ which was amazing.
It was such a good gig and there definitely needs to be more like this in Nairn. All the musicians were amazing and so much money was raised for the football team which is good! Hopefully there’ll be more like gigs like this in Nairn more often.
