Jemma Tweedie and Neal Kinghorn at Glachbeg Croft Folk Club - Tuesday 19 MarchThe gig at Glachbeg on Tuesday was really good and everyone that played are definitely worth going to see! There were five open mic artists to start the night off. First on was Inverness indie/ rock band Searching For Donkeys. I really liked their end song 'Take Some Time'. I really liked their music and thought they sounded really good. Next on was Adrian Telfer who also plays in his own band All Hat No Cat. He sang two of his songs 'Highland Blues' and 'Sing My Song' which both had catchy tunes and lyrics! After Adrian was Chris Roberts and Howard Swindells, playing a new song of Chris's 'Apple Tree', I heard Chris and Howard play at Glachbeg last month as well. Next on was Dan Leckie from Aberdeen playing two of his own songs 'To Be A Monkey' and 'Robin Hood', both catchy names and songs! The last open mic artist was Belsie who played a couple of his self written songs.
After the open mic session finished the first on to play was Jemma Tweedie from Nairn. I've seen Jemma play a few times before and really like her music. She opened her set with 'Two Hands' which is the title track from her EP. Next song was a cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana which always sounds really good! She played a mixture of her own folk based songs, finishing her set with 'Drunken Coastal Town' which is a song about Nairn (where we are both from!)
Last to play was Neal Kinghorn from Inverness, who is a reglar singer at Glachbeg. He played a few covers of songs from Crosby Tyler and Mississippi John Hurt. He also played a couple of his own songs 'All Of Time' and 'Scots Pine'. He did a mix of traditional blues songs which sounded really good, even if his guitar battery did go a bit 'fuzzy' at the start! Neal's sound is very laid back and was well received by the audience.
For anyone who doesn't know Glachbeg Croft Folk Club on the Black-Isle is held monthly with different folk singers and open mic artists.
I also went last month and did a review for Inverness Gigs
