I met up with Red Kites before their gig at the Ironworks for the Easter Showcase. I think doing the interview on a hill outside of a church is definitely the strangest place I've done an interview! Red Kites are a folk/ rock band from Guildford, although lead singer Moteh is originally from the Highlands. They are definitely worth going to see if you ever get the chance!
· You released your first EP ‘Beat in Time’ last year. Are there any plans to release another EP soon or have you been writing any new music?
Yeah we’re recording it in April and should hopefully have it released in June but we’re not too sure yet!
· Who do you all like listening too?
Coldplay, Biffy Clyro, Bastille, Kodaline, Arcane Roots, Dry The River. Toy Story sound track, ke$ha, One Direction, Nikki Minaj (I kinda get the feeling the last few are not true!)
· Did any of them help influence you when writing the EP?
We wanted to do a sort of folky/ rock thing. It’s kind of like Biffy Clyro with Mumford and sons
· Is there any music you don’t like?
Jazz, soul, clubmusic (I can’t remember who said what but they don’t all not like the same things!)
· Have you got any plans for a tour?
We’re going to the Netherlands to do a gig and then we’re going to be hopefully recording a couple of videos
· Will you be coming back to the Highlands soon?
Yeah! It would be good to play Rockness again!
· Last year you played up here at Belladrum and Rockness. Do you know if you’re playing at any festivals this year?
We’re playing Redfest this year and we’re trying to book other festivals as well.
· Are gigs in the Highlands different from gigs in Guildford?
There’s more people at the gigs up here! We’ve had a couple of really big gigs in Guildford but there aren’t really any venues like the Ironworks there. We played in Mad Hatter last time we were up here and that was a really good gig!
· Do you listen to any of the bands from Inverness?
Yeah Lionel! Josh from Lionel used to be in a band with me (Moteh). We like The whiskey River Band and Rachel Sermanni as well!
· What are the next plans for Red Kites?
We have our new members Jan Cees and Craig, we’re doing gigs and hopefully releasing another music video!
